* Questions to ask your municipal candidate for the fall city election

The key to political candidates is that they want your vote and many will promise most anything to get your vote.  The key is not what would they do in any issue, but what values would they bring to the many decisions, foreseen and unforeseen, which they will face.   What we want is an honest candidate who puts the wellbeing of people first.

Some simple questions may get at their values and priorities.

What values would you bring to city council that you would not compromise and for which you would be willing to be held accountable?

What does social responsibility mean to you as an elected city councilor?

How would you improve Integrity in our municipal government?

How would you improve Environmental sustainability in this city?

How would you improve Economic sustainability in this city?

How important is societal benefit in your decision making?

When the interests of big development projects compete with the interests of local residents, who do you give the most weight to in the decision process?

At the very least, you will get a sense of whether the candidate has ever considered their personal values as important to political decisions, or has even given the subject any serious thought.

  2. Excellent ideas. I am working on a set of questions for my blog. In our town there is a controversy over a planned hydro project.
It has dominated much of the media. It is also inspiring a one-issue candidate.
